Nightfall
Fog settles in
Hides the land
Shrouding all
With its veil
Eeriness
In the distance
Lights
Through the dark
Each dimmer than
The one before
Shine
Shadows
Take control
Hovering
Ever so slightly
Spirits
Searching
Seeking
A new host
As I stand
Waiting
In the night

Each night, as she approached the stairs

He would appear, but was not really there

Unsure, if it was simply her imagination

Wondering, if it was merely her own creation

Never could she find him, he was hidden well

Still, he held her, completely, under his spell

Spindles on the staircase, illuminated glow

Shadows in the hallway, dancing to and fro

Footsteps creaking, across the floor of tiles

They seemed to keep walking on, for miles

No matter where she turned, she was alone

The only sound around, a low, guttural groan

Twas the shimmer of a light, quite an eerie thing

Laughter at the doorway, made the doorbell ring

Why is it, he would toy with her, and scare her so?

Why was she chosen, perhaps, she’ll never know

So many candles burning, no brighter than a single flame

Dimly lit distractions, another one, they’ve come to claim

Keep your eyes on the colors, red and yellow float away

Spirits, in the mortal plane, release hidden souls this day

Guard your loved ones closely, lest they be taken, too

When the time has come, alas, they’ll also come for you

Fear not they who visit, regard the plan they must keep

To gather those who’ve lost their way, gather in the sheep

Lead them to greener pastures, far away from hurt and pain

Then remind us, there will be a day, we’ll be together, again

It’s just past two in the morning. The house is quiet, except for the furnace, a dull drone through vents. I am reading, but I am not alone. The bathroom switch is flipped, but there is no light. I wait. Continuing reading, some minutes pass until, again, a light switch flips, this time in the hallway. Still no light, just a game being played. I laugh, knowing at some point she’ll give up and go to bed.

However, she will not sleep. She’s too busy wondering what I am doing up at this God forsaken hour. And I speak to her silently, saying, who else would know of your antics if I was not awake. All is still again, the furnace still hums, but the light switches remain quiet. There are no footsteps, only a small voice of a child, saying good night. She likes it here and visits often. A comfort, in an often dark world, such as me.

And just when I think it’s safe, I hear her giggling. She knows she has gotten me out of bed to write. Perhaps that is her ruse all along. Perhaps, she is my muse. At least for this moment.

Authors Note: Some of you may remember this little girl.  I have written about her before, “A Tiny Voice“.  Her visits have become  more frequent and she no longer cries out.  In any case, she knows she keeps me on my toes.   🙂

The lovely Helene of Willow Poetry has challenged us with “What do you See?”.  You may write a poem, haiku, tanka or short story that represents what you see or feel within you.  More info can be found in the link below.

Ah, the festival of lights, to honor La Lune

He had waited to see them, soaring high

And the gods of the sky, all came to watch

Showing their presence, in an Earthly sky

One by one, the glow of the lanterns flew

From streets below, to the heavens above

With the planets dancing, as planets do

Once again, with the sky, he’d found his love

Gazing into the night, allowed him to dream

The possibilities were endless, he was sure

As long as the gods, were pleased with these gifts

Something, he always hoped, he had procured
