In a darkened place, beside a tree
A rusted, old, antiquated jalopy
Sat with no driver, appeared empty
Not really sure how this could be

The headlights were on, beaming
Light through the fog, streaming
In the distance, someone screaming
Please wake me up, I must be dreaming!

This nightmare has gone too far
I can’t get away, from this wicked car
I’m not even sure where we are!
This whole thing is quite bizarre

Wait. What do I mean saying we?
All this time, I thought, it’s only me
I’m not really sure what it is I see
But this forest has become too creepy

Half asleep, I try to make my way back
Through the foggiest mist, in the black
Of night, where the spirits always attack
And I find myself, way off track

Fumbling around, looking for light
Not another soul, within my sight
Thank goodness, that would be a fright
If someone else, came out, in the night

Running blindly, through the wood
Flashbacks of evil, a lost childhood
I’d awaken myself, if I could
Nightmares keep you, scared, for good

Will it ever end, the constant knocking

Of raindrops against window panes,

Like little ones trying desperately

To come inside, hoping to find warmth and safety

And let it snuggle them to its breast, comforting

The nightmares that challenge them.

Every night, the sin of the “other”,

Wraps itself in the blanket, stifling

The heartbeat of the child who lay there

Quietly, fearful, to speak a word, lest he

Or she feel the wrath of the storm

Perhaps it is not the skies raining at all

Perhaps it is the child, who knows not

What love really is, only what they were told

By the “other”, whose only love is a lie

Statistics regarding child sexual abuse can be found HERE, however, the Justice Dept. has not updated its records in five years.  Shame on them.  If you believe a child is in danger, please don’t hesitate…call the authorities.  You could be saving a child’s life.

Maybe they won’t see me

And I can hide my fear

It’s dark inside this cardboard box

They won’t find me here

They holler and they argue

Then they take it out on me

I’m sorry if I let them down

If only they would see

I’m not the reason for the pain

Or the reason for the sorrow

Understand that I would like

To see my next tomorrow

I can hear them coming closer

I can see them through the hole

I’ll hold my breath, and pray real hard

Please God, save my soul

In 2014, state agencies identified an estimated 1,580 children who died as a result of abuse and neglect — between four and five children a day. However, studies also indicate significant under-counting of child maltreatment fatalities by state agencies — by 50% or more (info found at https://www.childhelp.org/child-abuse-statistics/).

That’s 1580+ too many…. Don’t be afraid to report child abuse!
