What is that sound,
Outside my window pane;
Tap, tap, on the glass,
But it is not the rain.

Take flight, across the fullest moon
Watch as creatures swoop, and swoon
Seek out their journey, ride the wind
Then pause a moment, do not rescind
The thoughts, which carry you away
Take heed, as branches begin to sway
Along with the breeze, they gently fly
Dance with the night, let time go by
Forget the sorrows, gone, yesterday
Send them all packing, to the Milky Way
The glow of the light, shines through the dark
Though life is, often led by, a question mark
Gives comfort, to those who fear in the night
An escape, wings spread, exhale, take flight

What is that sound,
Outside my window pane;
Tap, tap, on the glass,
But it is not the rain.
Shadows move in closer,
Only fingers do I see;
Trapped in my own bedroom,
He has finally come for me.
No escape from the darkness,
No, this is not the night;
Still, I should make a run for it,
But I’m blinded, by the light.
How can this be happening?
Why pick me, I ask;
Seems my question is complex,
Too tough for his simple task.
Pondering what the next step is,
He seemingly moves away;
Now’s my chance to run for it,
But something makes me stay.
This shadow brings me comfort,
When nighttime offers none;
Perhaps I should confront him,
Instead, I choose to shun.
Be gone with you, I cry aloud,
You are not welcome here
Still, he lingers, knowing,
It’s his presence that I fear.

Sweet child
Let them see
Innocent eyes
Not understanding
Let tears flow freely down
I will shelter you from harm
And never let you fall from grace
For their light is much too dark to shine
But, your light shines much too brightly to dim
Author’s Note: Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually. An estimated 683,000 children (unique incidents) were victims of abuse and neglect in 2015, the most recent year for which there is national data. About four out of five abusers are the victims’ parents. A parent of the child victim was the perpetrator in 78.1% of substantiated cases of child maltreatment. (Info via National Children’s Alliance). If you know of a child who is being abused, please…say something. Calls can be anonymous!

She froze, like frost on blades of grass, in morning
No need to venture farther, she’d heed this final warning
Footsteps, in the distance, she was not there alone
Was that a floorboard creaking, or a wandering spirit’s moan?
Stretching out, listening, hoping she could hear
Shrinking back against the wall, all she felt was fear
Thumping getting louder, twas the pounding of her heart
Knowing she’d no time to waste, this demon she’d outsmart
Bathed in sweat, shivering, her clothes now soaked, it seemed
Waking up, inside her head, afraid of her own dream
