I’m over at Sally’s today. She’s been digging in my archives and shared a poem I wrote about my marriage. We’ll be celebrating 34 years on the 20th. Thanks, Sallly!!! ❤️

While walking through the forest
I came across this hairy cluster
I wanted to look to see what it was
It took all the strength I could muster

It seemed to grow, as I approached
My imagination was in overdrive
As I got a closer look, I was sure
It was something very much alive!

Hundreds of little tentacles
Were reaching, out of the ground
As if to say, please won’t you stay?
I found this quite profound!

I managed to take a photo or two
For no longer could I loom
Then read in the paper, the very next day
About an epidemic, called the “Shroom Boom”

I took myself to the hospital
Told the nurses about my discovery
Next thing I knew, though it was a blur
I woke up in a room called recovery

Not really knowing what happened
But it really must have been humongous
I asked the doctor what all the fuss was
He said “It seems you were a fungus among us!”

Colleen’s fabulous poetry challenge for this week are Poet’s Choice!  That’s right, it’s the first challenge of the month, and we get to pick!  Check out Colleen’s blog to find which forms of poetry are acceptable for this challenge.  Have fun!

My poem is written as a Tanka.

When eyes tightly close

Tis the time for fantasy

Invading my dreams

Like a caramel sundae

Sugary sweetness oozing

Waves, against the sand, the tide rolls in

As I walk along the beach, this summer day

The pier, in the distance, waits in hazy morn

The softening day, through the clouds, allay

Tones of pink, against gray, night dissipates

Coloring the skies, with my favorite hues

Reeds blow gently, in the hush of the breeze

Shadows creep quietly, then, slip from view

The taste of the sea, the salt in the air

Memories, of my childhood, spent there

To go back, and relive, those days in the sun

Lazily walking, until the daylight is done

A rendezvous, in the ebony night

Nothing is hidden, illuminous sight

She sparkles in his shadow, his smile, a shine

In hopes she will come to him, this beauty, sublime

He beckons to her, she draws herself near

Yet she never quite stops, sailing by, in the clear

Of winter’s dark, she’s a tease in the sky

Moon longs for Venus, but she passes him by

Authors Note: This poem and others like it can be found in my chapbook “Dark is the night“, available in paperback, and coming to Kindle soon!
