Hidden inside a prickly spine

Flavorful chestnuts, quite divine

Roasted in the fireplace, oh, how sweet!

Revealing such a wonderfully tasty treat

But it wasn’t all fun and games, no way

It took us forever, and a day

To open the pods, from which they grew

Good thing we remembered what to do

Out to Dad’s woodshed, we ran through the mizzle

Searching the toolbox, for his faithful chisel

When at last we had found it, we ran back inside

Impatiently waiting, we’d cracked them open, wide

Layering the chestnuts in a pan for the fire

Dad would sit back, watch our faces, and admire

All of us, savoring the tender meat that we found

Hoping more chestnuts would fall to ground

But the season is over, the trees are all bare

We stuffed ourselves silly, so we really don’t care!

A Raging Inferno ~ #SeptemberWriting #fiction

The fire burned out of control, ignited by a single spark. It was a simple flick of ash that swallowed everything in its path. Flames erupted, hissing and spitting, taking the land with it. As more and more embers sparked, my eyes caught a glimpse of her standing there, cloaked in black. She looked frozen in time, out of place among the raging inferno. I called out to her, but she ignored me. Perhaps she didn’t hear me. I called again. She seemed startled, not knowing someone else had been close by. She kept her head down and her hood over her face so I could not see her. I walked closer to her, but the heat from the flames pushed me back. Yet, she stood there, unaffected by the destruction occurring around her. There was a flash, an explosion, as the fire hit a gas line. I looked again, and couldn’t find her. Suddenly, there was a calm, an almost autumn like breeze brushing by me. The fire tamed, leaving behind a plume of smoke, where once she stood.

She dances with the fire

A mistress of the flame

Where some must go, to find her

Yet, no one knows her name

She swirls about, like smoke

She is kindled from the ashes

And she’ll burn you, this is certain

With each spark, her power flashes

Her mystery, kept hidden

Her secrets, safe within this place

The spirit, who feeds on fire

Is the girl, who has no face

Author’s Note:  Have you ever looked into a fire and wondered what it was you saw?  There are always fire spirits present.  Can you see her cloak?   😉

Through the portals of time

The universe expands

Darkness dissipates

With light’s open hands

*

Fire below us, scorches the earth

Heavenly auras, the soul of rebirth

*

Fear not the door

That takes you this way

Enter with faith

In this cosmic array

*

Feel the energy, the pulse of the sun

You and the universe, together, as one
