Two days of eating
Stuffed to the gills
The thought of the clean up
Is giving me chills!

Boxes unwrapped
Colored paper abounds
I’m looking for help
But there’s no one around!

Each year I swear
Next year will be diverse
But who am I kidding?
It’s just getting worse!

At some point, I give in
OK, I’ll host Christmas
Then reality hits me
I should mind my own business

Ah, but everything turns out
Exactly as I planned
As I smile at my family
Thinking, yes, life is grand

To allow us to gather
Around the table together
To reminisce, laugh
And remember forever

Making new memories
Each day that we share
At holiday time
When we are all there

Then I suddenly realize
The table’s now empty
They all seem to escape
When the dishes are plenty!

But, alas, I should know this
There’s no one to help clear
But when dessert is announced
They all, instantly, reappear!!

Harriet was just an old pheasant

Spent days on the beach at Point Pleasant

She was sunning away

Burned to a crisp, oy vey

Now dinner for some boardwalk peasants

Spun, like an intricate maze, you get caught

Her gossamer strings are not easy to avoid

In the garden, she waits, her dinner, sought

You become a corpse, your future destroyed

Every Sunday, we would meet
At Mama’s, twas the place to be
Good home cooking, what a treat
We were one big happy family

Until the day, Mama changed it up
Served us, in these little black pans
We couldn’t tell what it was for sup
We were all a bit of a baffled clan

We asked and pried, to no avail
She said dig in, and stop yapping
All we wanted was a little detail
Never ate what needed unwrapping

One by one, we all stuck in our forks
Each time we pulled mashies and corn
Seems Mama forgot to add the pork
So there we sat, sad and forlorn

But Mama ate away at her meal
Seems she simply didn’t understand
Her dish was lacking in plate appeal
From the table, we all did disband

Now, maybe you’re thinking shame on her
The woman didn’t feed her poor family well
But Mama knew exactly what she was doing
When the other dinners, into her belly, fell

Still Waiting – #poeticprose – #JanuaryWriting

The boat was empty, not a soul in sight, he perched high on the branch, as sun set to night; watching and waiting, always calculated his timing, he was ready for his dinner, so he started his priming. When out of nowhere, came the rush of wings; nothing ever good, came out of these things. Sighing, he knew, he had heard it before; the eagle had found, his hidden place, once more. Now honing in on the fish he espied, the hawk simply sat there, watching, wide eyed; he knew better than to challenge this bird, trying to do so would be quite absurd. Instead he lamented, on what he should do next; there was still one more fish, but to get it, complex. So he waited again, til the eagle had gone; hoping this time, he had truly moved on. Again, there it was, that sound ever roaring; he was back for the other, that darn eagle, came soaring! Off went the second fish, into claws, twas transferred; all the hawk could do now, was go hungry, dumb bird…

The moral of the story: He who hesitates, often misses dinner.
