I hit a rough patch of water in my journey toward the sun. Perhaps, this was as far as I should go, and yet I had a yearning to go farther, to meet the sea, and travel beyond this piece of land I called home. The shore was so close, but without my boat, I wouldn’t be able to go on.

The land around me was still bathed in darkness, as the sun was just beginning its rise over the horizon. I contemplated getting out of my boat and walking to the shore, to greet the morning, but thought otherwise, as I did not know if I was alone.

For years I had heard stories of the First Lighters, they who only appeared at dawn. I was told they nestled themselves into the bushes, trees and grass that led up to the ocean, lying in wait for whomever happened along their way. I never did find out what happened to people once they found them. No one ever wanted to talk about that part, but it was enough to pique my curiosity. After all, I was never one who listened to the warnings from the elders. It got me into more trouble than I wish to remember.

Climbing out of the boat, trying to be as quiet as possible, as to not upset the natives, or whatever, I found my footing and began my walk to the water. An occasional crunch under my feet made me stop, just long enough to listen for sounds, other than my own. So far I was doing okay. It wasn’t long before I reached the shoreline, the sun a bit higher, and gleaming a golden path, over the ocean. It was then I realized why the elders were so frightened.

I felt a tugging at my heart as I walked back to my boat, dragging it onto the land, and carrying it to the shore. Gently pushing it into the water, I hopped in, and using my oar, I made my way into the ocean, following the path of the sun as it climbed into the sky. I said my silent goodbyes, and never looked back. Now, I too, had become a First Lighter.

I watch him row, against fiery light
Just a silhouette, of a man, in a boat
Moving his paddles, left and right
On the calm river waters, he floats

I wonder, has he a care in the world
Or is he trying to escape, from the past
The fronds about him blow, unfurled
Still, he remains this silent outcast

Each night, it’s the very same thing
He rows by, while the sun starts to set
Sometimes, I think I hear him sing
But most likely, it’s the wind’s quartet

Rustling through the broken air
Creating just enough sound to be heard
Unlike the man in the boat, unaware
My curiosity of him, he has stirred

Whilst riding along, on the ferry, cross stream

With a captain, quite cavalier, and in his prime

Into the dock, we crashed, which created a scene

Seems the captain forgot, to drop anchor, on time

I no longer need this boat, to carry me on my way

I simply float on waters, under feathered clouds, gray

And yet there is this color, it shines, within the dark

One calling, aloud, my name, singing sweetly, as a lark

Who must be hiding in the trees, lining these waters, afar

I wonder, does he sing for me, or is he wishing me au revoir

As I glide about, in my boat, I see my lantern start to dim

Sailing, into the shining light, I leave behind, a phantom

Singing sweetly, from a limb

Still Waiting – #poeticprose – #JanuaryWriting

The boat was empty, not a soul in sight, he perched high on the branch, as sun set to night; watching and waiting, always calculated his timing, he was ready for his dinner, so he started his priming. When out of nowhere, came the rush of wings; nothing ever good, came out of these things. Sighing, he knew, he had heard it before; the eagle had found, his hidden place, once more. Now honing in on the fish he espied, the hawk simply sat there, watching, wide eyed; he knew better than to challenge this bird, trying to do so would be quite absurd. Instead he lamented, on what he should do next; there was still one more fish, but to get it, complex. So he waited again, til the eagle had gone; hoping this time, he had truly moved on. Again, there it was, that sound ever roaring; he was back for the other, that darn eagle, came soaring! Off went the second fish, into claws, twas transferred; all the hawk could do now, was go hungry, dumb bird…

The moral of the story: He who hesitates, often misses dinner.
