I watch the Earth weep

As rain falls from a dark sky

Releasing its pain

Til light of day emerges

With colors of a rainbow

Authors Note: This was my first attempt at a Tanka.  I’m not sure if I got it right!! All comments, help, etc, are greatly appreciated!

All the folks called him Alligator Alley

Never questioned just how he did tally

His score on the course, so uncanny

For a gator, whose grip was so clammy

Golfers stood around him, and stared

To question his form, no one dared

Still, his ball would set off any Geiger

But this reptile could never be Tiger

Every day, he would practice his swing

Until one day, he gave up on this thing

Claiming golf was meant only for man

But he’d always remain a true fan!

I am honored, once again, to have one of my poems published in Vita Brevis! Many thanks to Brian Geiger, editor, for finding this piece worthy of gracing his literary publication! 🙂

I find them in the most unusual places
Little pieces of me I must have left behind
I wonder why they stopped where they did
How they settled in the forgotten cracks
Was it on purpose, or was it I no longer cared?
The particles of my life I chose to leave
Not wanting to be remembered for what was
Rather, what is, and what lies ahead
A glance in the mirror shows a different face
I battle the days when age is not a number
But a feeling, of weary bones, and creaky joints
That one cannot forget about, for another day
As I amble down the hallways, through time
A cobweb, seemingly misplaced inside
Makes me wonder if the spider, too
Has left behind her pieces, in forgotten webs
While she moves on, to find what lies ahead
And as I sweep away the…

Covered in Cornmeal – #poetry #SeptemberWriting

Mama always loved her baking
Sent me to the store for her needs
I would get lost for hours on end
Hurry up, don’t dawdle, she would plead

One day, I found myself browsing
In a section I should not have been
Knocked over the display in the window
Dumped the flour on the chair, what a sin

There was no way I’d get away with the mess
I had made on the floor and the chair
Not to mention the amount of cornmeal
That wound up, getting stuck, in my hair

I cleaned up the grains of powder
Coughing and sneezing, as I went on my way
When I told mama what happened
She gave me that look of dismay

Carefully, she combed out the flour
Admonished me for doing something wrong
Never again, did she send me to shop there
Which had been my plan, all along
