The sound of the ocean calls

And its creatures gather

To hear the mighty roar

Softly playing within

Only a whisper, crashing

Among the white capped waves

Bright lights, all around me, blinding,

Noisy streets, surround me, reminding

There’s no place to turn to, for quiet

Never been to the city? You must try it!

Different faces, and different names

Nothing here, is ever the same

Skyscrapers towering, larger than life

Hop in a taxi cab, things looking rife

Take in a show, have a drink at a bar

Go everywhere, find something bizarre

There’s nothing like it, not here, nor there

You’ll love taking in, NYC’s Times Square

What could that sound possibly be?
Perhaps it’s a branch from the old oak tree

I don’t know, mommy, it sounds very scary
Don’t worry, honey, maybe it’s a fairy!

No, they don’t make a howling noise
Oh? Maybe it the neighbor’s unruly boys

No, no, it’s not them, they’re fast asleep
Don’t cry, my daughter, no need to weep

I’m frightened by whatever is making that sound
Why, it’s only the wind, its voice, quite profound

The sounds of autumn

Much like whispers in the breeze

Speak, in subtle tones

Mama’s Musical Ear ~ #poetry

Mama heard noises, those sounds in the night

Growing much louder, they gave her a fright

Voices came calling, symphonies would play

Nowhere was an orchestra, much to mama’s dismay

No one to talk to, I think mama was cracked

But she insisted these noises, just keep coming back

Turns out she’s not crazy, not one little bit

The doctor, she said, put a finger on it

The music and voices, she heard them, quite clear

All on account of her musical ear

Musical ear syndrome (MES) describes a condition seen in people who have hearing loss and subsequently develop auditory hallucinations. (Google)
