Charli, over at the Carrot Ranch gave us the prompt Exhaustion. Here are the rules:

In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that includes exhaustion. Who is exhausted and why? Can you make art of exhaustion? Go where the prompt leads!

Exhausted. The mere thought of the word makes me tired. I suppose staying up until the wee hours of the morning isn’t the best way to overcome it, but writing has a way of taking what it wants. There’s never a choice.

Still, finding the chance to sneak a few winks before Marsha shows up is difficult. Once she is here, there is no hope of relaxing. She is a spitfire, a jumble of energy. I am just a tired old woman. She never understands. But then again, editors never really do.

Chapter 1… my mind is a blank.

Word Count: 99

Prompt: Exhausted

It Used to be Me – #poetry #pain

Why is it that the stars, can glow nightly?

But I easily burn out, exhausted, unsightly

My body dares me, to move about, quickly

Until the nerves become angered and prickly

Deciding I should, at last, just park it

Before something else, happens to spark it

Into a raging inferno, of liquid molten rock

When I look in the mirror, I see total shock

On a face I don’t recognize, how could it be

That the face in the mirror, used to be me

Wayside ~ #poetry #depression

Binding ties that grip the mind

Reality speaks, but so unkind

Fails to bring the healing vibe

Reminding me, things don’t jibe

Exhausted, as I trip and fall

No balance in this body, small

Wonder what it was I did not do

Always asking why, but never knew

Poisoned, I come down a notch

While others stop, and stare, and watch

As momentum drags me to my knees

Ugh! Dear God, I’m begging, please

Release my being, from this evil ride

That leaves me on the edge, wayside

Author’s note:  I am fine.  I wrote this because so many of my friends, as well as myself, are going through so many health issues, all of us, who grew up together.  You have to wonder….

You could tell by the look on her face
It was something she’d never embrace

Mama promised, if she got it right
A sweet surprise, would be her delight

Dressed up, in white lace and pink flowers
She tried to do it, for hours and hours

Lying down in the grass, quite exhausted
This whole curtsy deal had her daunted

Angered, indeed, by her now dirty knees
She’d rather lie there, than forever be taunted

Exhaustion ~ #poetry #freeverse

That overworked, unbearable feeling

A malaise, an inability to comprehend

The misunderstandings of normalcy

The attack on the body and mind

Carelessly and haphazardly tossing

Any bit of sanity into an abyss of black

An empty hole, where darkness overtakes

Your eyes, battling to remain aware, losing

Drifting off into a common nightmare

Replaying again and again, skipping

Like a broken record, struggling

To gain an even ground, never

Finding the way to regain, the vigor

Of energy dissolved, you breathe

Beaten down, until you collapse

From the weariness of trying

To defeat the undefeatable
