I found myself, alone, floating across the sea

In a tiny boat, I wondered what happened to me

The water, crystal clear, sparkled, like sunlit glass

Fish swam below me, schools of them, en masse

I couldn’t see anything, no matter where I looked

Suddenly, the calm receded, then the water shook

Up, from out of the ocean, a distant island appeared

At least I think it was, my eyesight, not quite clear

Palm trees swayed, in the breeze, atop a sandy shore

I shaded sun from my eyes, why couldn’t I see more?

Alas, I realized, this place, was all that had remained

Of Earth, of me and my boat, the rest is unexplained

Every day she’d come, with a book, in her hand

Set a blanket down, on the soft, and warm sand

Open to yesterday’s page, aloud, she would read

Seems this was the only thing, she’d ever need

Softly at first, against the crashing of the waves

Then a little bit louder, her voice, she’d engrave

Into the rush of surf, as it teased, near her feet

The sound of the water, her words, so sweet

And continue, she did, until light became dark

Then flag the page, with his faded bookmark

Promising to return to him, the very next day

Same place in the sand, for he liked it that way

Beyond the Stones – #shortstory – #JanuaryWriting

Beyond the forest glen, the realization struck her. She had been walking on the same stone path for what seemed like hours, and she was still in the place where she started. The air had changed, it was getting colder, and she had no jacket with her. Trying to decide whether she should turn around and go back or try one more time to get through the forest, she opted to go ahead.

Taking slow steps, she took note of how the path had changed. There was an iridescent glow to the stones that wasn’t there before. Even the trees looked strange, almost as if they were animated. She hesitated to go any further, but knew she couldn’t stop now. Night was falling, and soon the forest would sleep.

Several feet later, the stones, still glowing, ended. She couldn’t see around the bend, but the light was still there. Stepping as quietly as possible, she stopped where the stones ended and the densest part of the forest began. Surely she shouldn’t go into the forest. She had no flashlight, no lantern, and her phone was almost dead. She’d need that in case of an emergency. Thinking that over, she thought “This is an emergency!” Sighing loudly, then quickly covering her mouth, she saw she had no signal. The only choice she had was to keep walking in the woods, hoping she’d find the way out..

Diana, of Myths of the Mirror has a new feature on her blog called, “New Year, New Feature: a Speculative Fiction Writing Prompt.”  Please visit the link to find out more about the challenge, then get to it!

I have set myself down on my mountain to bask in the cold, pure white snow. The full moon is my companion, and I glisten in its light. The daytime sun has been harsh, and I am battered by its heat, thankful for the winter air, to regenerate my soul.  Still, I remain, a part of this vastness, alone, that is, until this particular day. I don’t often get visitors, but today is an exception. A trail of fine men have come to scale my sides and perhaps, even a bit of spelunking. I suppose I could show them I am here, but that would serve no purpose. Instead, I will wait until the moment is right.

Frozen in time, I
Sit upon the mountain top
Patiently waiting

Naïve men journey
Unaware of the danger
Oblivious eyes

As night grows colder
My cave offers them shelter
But not a way out

Snowcapped mountains, a place to roam

For a family of the wolves, tis their home

Frosted breath echoes, with every howl

Voices in the night, they’re on the prowl

The crisp frigid air, does charm their senses

Each one watches, with heightened defenses

Ready to strike, when the moment is right

Take heed to the call, of the wolf, in the night
