This incredible picture was taken from a rooftop, in Westchester, NY, by my dear friend, Ed “Brother Bud” Bates. Used with permission.

Beyond these forest lands, there lays
A frozen village, touched by rays
Encased in ice, nothing can be seen
It’s most ethereal, out of a dream

Skies of blue, touched by clouds
Overcast heavens, that shout aloud
The wild life’s echoed sound of joy
As warmth from the sun, completes its ploy

To melt away, these frozen limbs
Embrace the spirits, deep within
Then listens, as the forest fills with voices
The woodland, ever jubilant, rejoices

Knowing, this is only temporary
For Mother Nature, is quite contrary
And in a flash, she changes speeds
The whispering winds, planting seeds

While we await, the first of spring
To celebrant, every living thing
That comes back to life, as we espy
Preserved, a wilderness, beneath the sky

Winter’s wicked breath

Mundane, until it touches

On fallen autumn

Frost covets flora

A moment, frozen in time

Awaiting the spring

Diana, of Myths of the Mirror has a new feature on her blog called, “New Year, New Feature: a Speculative Fiction Writing Prompt.”  Please visit the link to find out more about the challenge, then get to it!

I have set myself down on my mountain to bask in the cold, pure white snow. The full moon is my companion, and I glisten in its light. The daytime sun has been harsh, and I am battered by its heat, thankful for the winter air, to regenerate my soul.  Still, I remain, a part of this vastness, alone, that is, until this particular day. I don’t often get visitors, but today is an exception. A trail of fine men have come to scale my sides and perhaps, even a bit of spelunking. I suppose I could show them I am here, but that would serve no purpose. Instead, I will wait until the moment is right.

Frozen in time, I
Sit upon the mountain top
Patiently waiting

Naïve men journey
Unaware of the danger
Oblivious eyes

As night grows colder
My cave offers them shelter
But not a way out
