Book Review – Fairies, Myths & Magic: A Summer Celebration by Colleen Chesebro

As a follower of all things magical and mythical, Colleen Chesebro had me at the title. “Fairies, Myths & Magic” is a wonder-filled collection of poetry and prose, ending with the Summer Solstice. Colleen touches on the plights of the Earth, damaged by human hands, particularly, the honey bees. In the poem “Wet Ink”, she takes you to Pearl Harbor through a tattoo artist with magical hands. In one short story, you’ll meet a sly fairy who tries to cast a love spell on his female friend.  Oh, the fun of this tale!

Colleen weaves tales of fairies and pixies, spells and promises, with imagery that takes you into the story, as if you were one of the characters, all the while teaching you about the points of a Septagram and the magic of this fairy star. My very favorite story in this book is, “Halloween Havoc”. As an October baby myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the lightheartedness of this tale, especially the ending. It had me smiling and laughing, as the story kept me entranced.

Colleen Chesebro’s use of different poetry forms keeps the reader interested, and adds a nice element to the book, one that will keep you turning the pages. I found it difficult to put down!

This book was given to me by the author. I truly enjoyed her tales and poems, and I highly recommend this book to any and every one. Even if you don’t believe in fairies and magic, you will when you’ve finished this masterpiece of writing.

Book Review ~ “Sublime Shadows of Life” by Balroop Singh

5 stars, Balroop Singh, book review, darkness, death, dorindaduclos.com, life, light, love, poems, poetry, Sublime Shadows of Life, writing

From the author herself:

“Sublime Shadows of Life is a comment on life, its turbulent curves and relationships. It envisions people through the prism of poetry. I, you, he, we and they are universal symbols which highlight the fact that happiness is not a destination but a chasm to bury agony, anguish, grief, distress and move on! No sea of solitude is so deep that it can drown us. Sometimes aspirations are trampled upon, the boulders of exploitation and discrimination may block your path but those who tread on undeterred are always successful.”

My Review:

“Sublime Shadows of Life is a perfectly titled book, from author Balroop Singh. Each poem easily glides into the next yet, each one is its own entity. Singh captivates your heart, drawing you into her words, allowing you to feel the pain, the love, the longing for lost possessions and the fear of death. These complex emotions will have you rooting for the underdog, no matter who it may be, though you will find yourself in many of the verses.

In a journey through the ups and downs of life, we find there is always light after the darkness, there is always freedom from the demons who haunt, and there is always a chance to breathe new life into one’s own broken soul. Singh provides us with a means to forge ahead, and never give up.

This book is truly sublime poetry, written with the pen of a beautiful soul. Her words will clearly speak to you, as they did me.

For all who have not heard, the poetry community lost an incredible man yesterday.

His son writes, “It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sudden passing of my father Paul Lenzi. He was the cornerstone of our family and will be missed dearly. He began this blog as an a creative outlet and as a way of sharing his poetry. He never imagined it would develop such a large following, and the overwhelming support he received from this community touched him deeply. On behalf of our entire family, thank you. We are proud of the legacy of words he left behind.”

Paul was a very dear friend, and an incredible human being.  He helped me when I first started sharing my poetry, always having kind words to encourage.  I am deeply saddened that I will not see his name in my inbox any longer, but I am hoping his family will keep his blog, “Poesy plus Polemics” up and running so that we may go back and reread the many wonderful words he has written.

Paul, your legacy will live on through your beautiful family and through us, as the poetry community, and especially me, will never forget you.

Sleep well, my friend.  I know God has you in his loving arms.  ❤

As her eyes reflect, the azure sky

And time just seems to tumble by

She’s still a child, so full of wonder

That no man, ever, shall put asunder

Let her breathe, inhale the land

Reaching up, to the heavens, grand

Watching, as the clouds roam free

Then disappear beyond the tree

She sighs, at the beauty, shown above

And marvels, at the cooing, of a dove

She prays for man, may he find kindness

That God remove, his human blindness

And let him see, what she does see

Her Heaven, this, she knows to be

As through the day, she lives her dreams

For her God knows, it is she, he’ll redeem
