Overwhelmed by simple tasks
What is this I have become?
Sadness, behind my smiling mask
Truth is… I am feeling numb

Emotional, at the slightest change
Tears flow, and for no reason
Even to myself, I feel quite strange
Perhaps, it is that time of season

Where leaves once painted the trees
Now they lay, lifeless and brown
I watched them whirl, in the breeze
On their way, swiftly, falling down

I can relate to the leaves, you see
I’ve spiraled with them, for so long
Much like a twister, roaming free
Yet, unknowing if I truly belong

I carved myself a window

Chiseled away the hardened earth

Just in time to catch the light

Of a fiery sun’s rebirth

Orange painted clouds rejoiced

As the rays chased away the night

Flocks of feathered creatures

Took off, on a journey, aflight

As for me, I sat in awe and wonder

Watching, as day took its place

And colored my eyes with majesty

All this, through my own little space

I
Am one.
A simple
Yet complex root.
With new beginnings,
I plant my feet, and grow.
The mighty earth, under me
Nourishes my very being,
Nurturing my heart, however brief;
Until the moment I breathe my last breath
And I become one with the earth, again
Mixed in the soil, of a thousand years
Below the ground, where I once stood
Strong, and unwavering, though
At times, I would quiver
Much like leaves, in spring
Wishing for life
To return
Within
Me

Honoring Our Veterans 2019 – #VeteransDay

Today, in the United States of America, we celebrate Veterans Day. A day to honor the men and women who have fought in war, and fought for our freedoms, so that we may live as a free nation. Originally named Armistice Day, Congress changed the name in June 1954. In 1971, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October, but was later moved back to November 11 beginning in 1978.

****

“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.”1

****

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the day we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, who laid down their lives so that American’s could be free, free to choose, free to vote, free to live life.

We are and ever shall remain

“One Nation Under God, Indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for All.”

The next time you see a veteran, shake his or her hand, put your hand over your heart, just say Thank You. You don’t have to support war, but we do have to support our fellow Americans.

Thank you, to all the men and women of our military, here and away from home. My heart goes out to you and your families. I stand proud of my country because of you.

Time Stops – #VJsWeeklyChallenge – #Cinquain – #wait

I wait

Watching the clock

Anxiety seeps in

Time ticks by me ever slowly

Then stops

***

I dread waiting, for doctors, for things to happen, for traffic, for anything.  I have anxiety.  If I’m stuck somewhere, I panic.  Even simple places like waiting on line for an author to sign a book.  This happened to me recently. I should preface this with, I was just getting over being very ill and really wasn’t myself…

My daughter and I went to a book signing at the local book store.  We were excited.  We were going to meet one our favorite actresses and she’d be signing her new book.  The time for her arrival was slated to be 6PM.  We got there about 4:30PM, and were fifth in line!  Around 5PM, they allowed us to journey downstairs, through the winding ropes, and take our places as we awaited her arrival.

My daughter makes friends easily, as she did this day.  I had no idea what they were chatting about because by that time, the walls had started to close in.  I am also claustrophobic, and we were backed up against a wall.  It was 5:40PM.  Only 20 minutes to go.  Come on, Dorinda, you can do this.  I couldn’t.  I told Alyssa I was going upstairs to get some air.  The truth is I was having a panic attack.  I walked outside and really freaked.  Running back in, I asked for the ladies room and quickly locked myself inside.  Alyssa texted me with “What’s wrong?”.  I told her.  She was upstairs and by the bathroom before I could open the door.  We left.  No autograph.  I was heartbroken thinking I ruined her day.  But I have an amazing daughter.  She told me, “It’s okay, Mom.  I really just wanted to spend the time with you.”

Although I still feel horrible about her missing out, she made sure I knew exactly where I stood in her life.  If not for my daughter and husband, I’m not sure where I would be today.  I do know this. I am truly blessed…as long as I don’t have to wait.
