Today, in the United States of America, we celebrate Veterans Day. A day to honor the men and women who have fought in war, and fought for our freedoms, so that we may live as a free nation. Originally named Armistice Day, Congress changed the name in June 1954. In 1971, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October, but was later moved back to November 11 beginning in 1978.

****

“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.”1

****

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the day we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, who laid down their lives so that American’s could be free, free to choose, free to vote, free to live life.

We are and ever shall remain

“One Nation Under God, Indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for All.”

The next time you see a veteran, shake his or her hand, put your hand over your heart, just say Thank You. You don’t have to support war, but we do have to support our fellow Americans.

Thank you, to all the men and women of our military, here and away from home. My heart goes out to you and your families. I stand proud of my country because of you.

Life offers no comfort, to the ones who came back lost

Those whose minds, were taken, but really, at what cost

Trying to find the place, where last they knew their names

In a country that misunderstands, and never takes the blame

Locked inside, their restless souls, unable to assimilate

Homeless, lying in the street, oblivious to their fate

The drug of choice, so many, as they try to ease the pain

I pray to God, that someday, they’ll come back home, again

Smiling, gladly welcomed, by those they left behind

No longer in that empty space, that lingers, in their mind

A Soldier’s Story

You walk by me, a look of disgust
on your perfectly made up face
You’ve already labeled me, without
even knowing me, because
I live in a cardboard box on the sidewalk.

I am no different than you, except
I fought for my country, so that
you could live in freedom, I watched
as my brothers and sisters died, so
many didn’t make it back home, and
those who did, were scorned by you,
the perfect person who never saw a single day
of bloodshed, agony, horror

I live in this box because my country has
pushed me aside, and won’t give me a chance
to be me again, and so,
all you see is a dirty, unkempt man
who begs for coins so he can eat,
who takes up space on your
beloved ground, my ground, our ground

I did not ask to be thrown into combat,
I offered myself because I love this country
I fought for her honor, not mine
And because I am a soldier, you blame
me for the war, and turn your back on me,
this country I love, that continuously cuts spending
to the veterans, so that I cannot live the life
I so often miss

You see, I am human, same as you, except
I don’t have nice clothes or a fancy car,
A warm house or food on my table.
I live here, in my box, my home
in the hopes that one day, when I see you
walking down the sidewalk, you’ll
stop by my home and perhaps give me a smile
or shake my hand, maybe even
chat for a bit to learn why I am still here

All I need to know is that you see me, and understand
That I am a proud American….

That I am no different than you.
