This is for you, Dee….

Beside the bed, her sneakers lay
There are no feet in them, today
Leggings and blouses, tucked away
Never again to be worn

Earrings and bracelets, laid aside
Into their boxes, to safely abide
Worn with elegance, flair, and pride
No longer do they adorn

Photos, in an album, bent
Pictures of the one who meant
So very much, is now absent
Leaving her family, forlorn

Little reminders, around us dance
To catch a glimpse, perhaps, perchance
Of her spirit, one last glance
She would not want us to mourn

Instead, to remember a giving heart
A lover of opera, and collectible art
The happier times, of which we were part
For into her world, we were born

Authors Note: The picture above, from left to right is, my Aunt Dee, my Nana, my Mom, and that’s me in the front, taken mid to late 60’s.  I grew up with Dee, as we are only 10 years apart, and because of that, I considered her my sister, but I am an only child.  We shared each other’s mother, my Mom raising Dee, my Nana raising me.  It was a strong bond between four females that remains today.  I wrote this while thinking of all the good times Dee & I had as kids, and how close we are today, because of Rose and Madalyn.  I know my Mom would want us to celebrate her life, and not to mourn, for into her world, we were lovingly born.  ❤

Today, in the United States of America, we celebrate Veterans Day. A day to honor the men and women who have fought in war, and fought for our freedoms, so that we may live as a free nation. Originally named Armistice Day, Congress changed the name in June 1954. In 1971, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October, but was later moved back to November 11 beginning in 1978.

****

“On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.”1

****

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day. Memorial Day is the day we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, who laid down their lives so that American’s could be free, free to choose, free to vote, free to live life.

We are and ever shall remain

“One Nation Under God, Indivisible, With Liberty and Justice for All.”

The next time you see a veteran, shake his or her hand, put your hand over your heart, just say Thank You. You don’t have to support war, but we do have to support our fellow Americans.

Thank you, to all the men and women of our military, here and away from home. My heart goes out to you and your families. I stand proud of my country because of you.

We don’t need an elevator
To celebrate our love
Too many people
In between, try to
Push and shove
What we need
Is a little place
(Secret hideaway)
Where we can be
Alone
Today
And every day

This week, Colleen has given us the words Celebrate and Number as our challenge. Remember, you can only use synonyms to write your poetry!

Written as an Etheree, I chose Estimate and Ritual.

One
Seemly
Estimates
A timely span
On this living Earth
Unknowing where it ends
They often choose to reflect
Growing old, another birthday
With constant reminders from others
Who find the ritual more important
