High upon the cliff, bottle of rum, in hand

He stood, staring down, into the open sea

Was this the day when he’d finally let go?

Or would he, once again, panic and flee?

He took one last chug, dropping the glass

Watching, as it crashed against the rocks

Shattering, into a million pieces, shards

Stepping back, of his life, he took stock

Still, he was taunted by the raging waters

Crashing against the cliffs, ferociously

No more booze, to calm his quaking nerves

At last, he jumped, plummeting, into the sea

Feeling icy waters caress him, as deeper, he let himself fall

Neath the ocean, is now the place he calls home

Tis what he really wanted, after all…

There must have been a thousand lights
At least that’s what it looked like to her
Mesmerized by the flames of the candles
Blending together, everything was a blur

With every flicker, she became more enrapt
Her eyes, focusing on the dancing yellow
Not hearing his footsteps come from behind
He caught her off guard, this quiet fellow

He smiled ever briefly, then tipped his hat
Explaining why he was there, that day
Lighting a candle, for his wife, who passed
He gently knelt on the altar, to pray

Feeling a strong connection to this stranger
He, a man, who surely loved his wife
She was compelled, to kneel down beside him
And contemplate her own fate, in the afterlife

December Writing Prompt – Transfixed by the lights, she never noticed he was there – Day 13/31

Light, cast on the wooden bridge
Uneasy feelings, about to deprive
She, was in a hurry to cross over
He, merely wanted to stay alive

She called to him, to join her
He turned away, afraid to face
The destiny that surely awaited
That put them, there, in that place

She waited for him to answer
Only guttural sounds, from his voice
Hoping he’d turn back toward her
Knowing he had no other choice

The door to death, in front of them
The spirits came to collect, but who?
Lights swirled, merrily, only around him
The Fates come…

…and there’s nothing you can do.

He stood as still, as the dark night above him
In the distance, he saw her standing there
An apparition, she, who once loved him
Consumed by fear, all he could do was stare

His heart, racing, sweat pouring from his face
Watching her floating, weightlessly, in air
Wondering why she came back to this place
But his eyes, away from her, he couldn’t tear

Not thinking what could happen, he walks
She backs away, slowly, in silent despair
Begging her to speak, but she couldn’t talk
Knowing this now, he begins to declare

His sins, the reasons, she is no longer alive
He seeks forgiveness, from his once maiden fair
But she turns away, for she can never revive
The man who created his own nightmare

5 stars, Balroop Singh, book review, darkness, death, dorindaduclos.com, life, light, love, poems, poetry, Sublime Shadows of Life, writing

From the author herself:

“Sublime Shadows of Life is a comment on life, its turbulent curves and relationships. It envisions people through the prism of poetry. I, you, he, we and they are universal symbols which highlight the fact that happiness is not a destination but a chasm to bury agony, anguish, grief, distress and move on! No sea of solitude is so deep that it can drown us. Sometimes aspirations are trampled upon, the boulders of exploitation and discrimination may block your path but those who tread on undeterred are always successful.”

My Review:

“Sublime Shadows of Life is a perfectly titled book, from author Balroop Singh. Each poem easily glides into the next yet, each one is its own entity. Singh captivates your heart, drawing you into her words, allowing you to feel the pain, the love, the longing for lost possessions and the fear of death. These complex emotions will have you rooting for the underdog, no matter who it may be, though you will find yourself in many of the verses.

In a journey through the ups and downs of life, we find there is always light after the darkness, there is always freedom from the demons who haunt, and there is always a chance to breathe new life into one’s own broken soul. Singh provides us with a means to forge ahead, and never give up.

This book is truly sublime poetry, written with the pen of a beautiful soul. Her words will clearly speak to you, as they did me.
