Close at Heart ~ #poetry #childhood

Frozen flakes of downy white
Dance about, in midair flight
Hide the colors, left from fall
Covering, like a favorite shawl

Pristine, in their journey down
Still as such, they hit the ground
Blending with the grass, once green
Creating an ethereal winter scene

I watch, as children run and play
No school for them, it’s a snow day!
Oh, how I remember, when I was young
I’m catching snowflakes, on my tongue

They land on me, and I’m lost in this space
Catching one in my hand, this delicate lace
And hoping to catch one, for my daughter
Before it melts and turns into water

So she can make her very own memories
She’s smiling and giggling, and in her, is me
Like the beautiful snow, of winter’s art
Some things are meant to be close at heart

Contemplating the Afterlife ~ #poetry #DecemberWriting

There must have been a thousand lights
At least that’s what it looked like to her
Mesmerized by the flames of the candles
Blending together, everything was a blur

With every flicker, she became more enrapt
Her eyes, focusing on the dancing yellow
Not hearing his footsteps come from behind
He caught her off guard, this quiet fellow

He smiled ever briefly, then tipped his hat
Explaining why he was there, that day
Lighting a candle, for his wife, who passed
He gently knelt on the altar, to pray

Feeling a strong connection to this stranger
He, a man, who surely loved his wife
She was compelled, to kneel down beside him
And contemplate her own fate, in the afterlife

On Christmas Eve, Santa’s coterie of elves

Pack up the sleigh, and clear off the shelves

They have to make room, for next year’s toys

Being sure to make happy, little girls and boys

Take the Chance ~ #poetry #DecemberWriting

The air is heavy, as music fills the room
The loud sounds from the DJ, take up space
Holding her gaze briefly, but he dare not assume
He knew she could be, his one saving grace

She blushed, like petals of a rose bouquet
Watching him walk, across the crowded floor
Trying very hard, though, she couldn’t look away
She felt his stare, straight through, to her core

Afraid to do something, if he must confess
He bowed his head, in silent despair
Not sure what to say, so she would say yes
He quietly stood, next to this maiden, fair

Clearing his throat, gathering up his nerve
He simply asked her if she cared to dance
Graciously, accepting, with quite the verve
You never know, unless you take the chance
