They walked in together, five friends, joking about, most likely on a lunch break. Their destination, a pizza place, next to the coffee shop I had plopped myself in. I watched as they playfully pushed, randomly threw punches at each other’s faces, the typical teenage thing. Or was it? Five friends went in. Only four came out.

Based on an actual event….

It’s funny how things happen, how oblivious I am to my surroundings, and who I am, until I hit that proverbial brick wall and wonder why all I had done just faded away. She reminded me often of that. I don’t think I ever forgave her. After all, wasn’t it she who taught me how to hide my feelings, how to disappear into oblivion.

In Limbo ~ 50 Word Story

I died last night. Much like the wilted petals of an old bouquet of roses, I crumbled. My spirit lingered, then disappeared into the mist, and scattered my soul. Floating in limbo, I reached out, seeking those I remembered, and found myself lost, with those I had long since forgotten.

The sound, thunderous, like a storm unbridled. I held my head in my hands to stop the pain. It didn’t work, as the harder I pressed my fingers to my temples, the stronger the pounding became. I tried burying myself under a pillow, perhaps it would muffle the noise. I tried a different room. The sound dissipated, but only slightly, becoming a rather obnoxious thud, a cacophony of war drums, incessant and ceaseless. I dared to release my hands from my head and journey back into the other room, hoping the echoing had subsided and I could return to the peaceful silence I had before, but alas, there it was. That irritating rhythm, that knocking, that, now, what the ….? Who’s yelling?? Who’s yelling?!!

“It’ll be easy, you’re such a natural!”

Then why was it I stood, in front of a crowd of people I had known for so long and I froze. Yep, frozen solid. No eye contact, not even a blink. I was locked in total paranoia, not able to unbolt the latch that held me rigid on the stage. I felt numb, like my body had been taken over by a tub full of gelatin, only I wasn’t jiggling. I was a mere block of ice. Trying to control the fear, I slowly began to breathe, feeling myself thawing, breaking through the facade, and finally, speaking. But when I looked up, the room was nothing but a vapor. Apparently, while inhaling and exhaling, I had blown the cold out of my body, into a heated room and created a steam bath….I would never speak again.
