It was the same routine every year. The hopelessness she felt always reared its ugly head the day before everyone was supposed to find their soulmate. She hated Valentine’s Day, though she wasn’t always this way. She remembered a time when red roses were her very favorite. Now, she preferred the thorns over the soft velvety petals. He had ruined it for her, made her feel less than perfect, and given her background, it was so easy to do, then vanished from her life, without a trace, just like all the others. That’s when she decided men weren’t worth the trouble.

Until that one day, when Mr. Perfect showed up at the office, with a big smile, chatting away with the receptionist. He caught her staring, smiled, causing her to blush and sit down in her chair. It felt like so long since she had a reaction like that, she didn’t know what to do. Looking up, he was standing there, still grinning. She licked her lips, then caught herself and cleared her throat. He was a smooth talker and eventually talked her into meeting for dinner on Wednesday night, both seemingly forgetting what day it was.

When the red roses arrived at her desk on Valentine’s Day, she purposely pricked her finger, watching the blood ooze. She licked the red liquid, savoring the flavor. Reading the card, she smiled. He would never know what he was in for. After all, red, was her favorite color.

Saw her standing on the corner

Knew he was in for a treat

Took her to his hotel room

This girl, he met on the street

Things got a bit too crazy

He lost control of the scene

She blocked his exit, no way out

The look on her face, quite serene

Plotting his next move, his escape

He walked to where she sat

Handed her a hundred dollar bill

And that was the end of that

The ground continued to quake

As she appeared, aloft, before them

Wings, the sight of evil fire

This vision of chaos, deplored them

In the air, she floated, athirst

Waited, as she watched them fall

Beguiled, by her ravishing beauty

They never saw the peril, at all

Sparks, which ignite the fire, begin

With a simple raise of her hands

Answering, to the gods of flame

Bloodthirsty, their final demands

Darkness falls over, black is night

What’s left, is the flicker of a blaze

Seen from a distance, rising higher

This light, from the darkened haze

They urge her on, to her greatest feat

She conjures their greatest desire

Then leave her, languishing, in the heat

Of the flames, from her funeral pyre

What I have left, from my evenings with you

Holds me spellbound, haunted, the desire was true

Games that we played, seemed like hours on end

You were my lover, but never my friend

Bound to you, my eyes, always blind

Marks round my wrists, for days, to remind

Your sentiments toward me, extremely erotic

Sent my heart, into beats, oh! so chaotic

No other could touch me, that, you forbade

Yes, I was your prisoner, caught in your charade
