Standing, quietly, at the bottom of the stairs

No one ever seems to notice her there

Dress, stained with red, tells of her plight

How she had vanished, that Halloween night

No one came looking, for fear they would find

A sorceress, like her, unsettled in mind

Never was welcomed, as one of the folk

Evidenced now, by the blood on her cloak

But she knew much better, revenge in her sight

Luring them closer, with the glow of a light

Into the vastness, they’d soon disappear

Lost to mortality, imprisoned, in her sphere

Sky is red, beyond the pane

Spell book opens, once again

Glows in a fiery orange flame

Speaks to me, calling, a name

Who is it, I begin to obsess?

Has it come, for me, to possess?

A spark of desire, from within

Incantations, will now, begin

I watch, the fire, burning bright

Embers seeking, in mid-flight

Touch my skin, no burn I feel

Awaken, but this, was oh so real!

Sky is red, beyond the pane

Spell book closes, once again

She sits in the forest, outside her home
Listening, to the whispers of the trees
Spider webs form a woven dome
As the mouse, finally, finds his cheese

She contemplates what needs be done
Before the day arrives, she’s awaiting
Knows it shall be filled with fun
And her spells, she’ll be anticipating

No one knows quite what to expect
Every year, she conjures anew
Keep the kiddies inside, you must protect
Else, they’ll wind up in a potion or two

Lash of eye, and strand of hair
She’ll take from a youthful mortal
Mixed together, drink up, she’ll dare
As she lets out a rather odd chortle

Pumpkin laughs, and shines its light
He’s such an eerie sight to behold
Better stay alert, on Halloween night
Lest your soul, to the witch, be sold

Between the Courtyard – #writephoto – #shortstory

I stand in the courtyard of my mother’s gardens. Always well-manicured, I was never allowed to play in them, but I spent many of my childhood days reading, and just thinking. Being surrounded by lush green grass, and the occasional flower tends to let one’s mind wander to places it should not.

My old home is in ruin now. Time has not allowed a kind transition. Vines have replaced the pristine white facade, and the old oaken door is warped shut. So many memories are held in that small house. How I wish they were all kind ones. I distinctly remember mother telling us we were not to bother old lady Werth. She was the woman who lived directly across from us, her door facing the courtyard, same as ours. It was never open, and we questioned if someone actually lived there. She must have been a hundred years old.

Curiosity got the better of me, one day I decided to knock on her door. The other kids ran to hide, afraid of who or what might answer. But no one did. I knocked again. I was a persistent pain in the butt when it came to getting answers. Sadly, after the fourth time knocking, I gave up. I remember telling my friends, “You big babies, I told you there was nothing to be afraid of! She’s probably long gone by now. She was so old!” They agreed, slowly coming out of their hiding places.

Today, I stand looking at the old house, once again. For laughs, I decide to knock on Werth’s door one more time. I make my way up the steps and upon reaching the dark wooden door, raise my hand to knock. Before I can complete this task, the doors open by themselves. I check, but there is no wind to cause this. Perhaps there is a new family living there, and they saw my approach. However, an eerie sensation comes over me, and I hesitate to go any further.

A frail voice beckons me to come in, and as I do, the dark doors behind me close, with a loud thud. I have made my own transition, no longer in the glory of my mother’s grandest accomplishment, but in the confines of an old house, now prisoner of the old witch who still lives…

I heard them shout, “It’s Halloween!”

As children scurried, about the scene

Clad in costumes, their faces painted

I’m sure we’ve never been acquainted

But still they come, and ring the bell

Trick or Treat, I hear them yell

Such silly little things, are they

Who walk about and head my way

I’ll greet them with a kindly smile

And watch them grab my candy pile

Then suddenly, they’ll take off running

They think they’re sly and ever cunning

But I got them good, just wait and see

I’ve made this for them, especially

A potion, of which is quite austere

Something to make it perfectly clear

Halloween is a night for ghouls

Witches, goblins, black cats, and fools

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!
