Invisible light, doth never shines
Darkness, from my window, pines

Call to me, I’ll venture far
Away, from every shining star

Caress me with your ebony skies
Blackened, let the spirits rise

Take this earthly pound of flesh
Into the dead of night, refresh

My demons, let them now escape
Into the shadows, we reshape

The visions of the humans, dreams
Replace them all, with mortal screams

Take them, slowly, through the gate
Fear not, mere mortals, do not hate

The pitch that pries you from the light
Take comfort, in the blackest night

For it summons you, with adjuration
To follow, into, eternal damnation

Nightmares

Awakened memories
Sunken dreams once buried

Washed ashore

On the crashing of waves
Invading inner sanctity

Drowning tranquility

Ever rolling in again
With the endless tide

Flashbacks and Yesterdays ~ #poetry #freeverse

Flashbacks, and yesterdays, things that should be

forgotten, but are not, unexplained, pushed away

from what you need, only to find another place, to hide

blanking out pictures, sepia nightmares that won’t subside.

Colorless figures you run from, don’t look behind, they’ll find

you, tucked away, in the dark, you breathe, the only sound

and as footsteps echo through the hallway, doors open.

Hold your breath! Eyes shut! Don’t let the monsters in!

Staggering Heights ~ #dark #fiction

The caffeine hadn’t kicked in yet. Even toothpicks wouldn’t have held these eyes open. They’d snap from the weight of my lids. Half asleep, I stood there, in a daze, trying to remember what had happened the night before. The elves, hammering away in my head, reassured me they hadn’t forgotten. These blackouts were becoming worrisome, not to mention altogether dangerous.

I glanced around the room, still not quite sure where I was. In the distance, I could make out the Manhattan skyline, lazily communing with the haze of morning. The view was a bit daunting, what with my fear of heights, which was rather quickly enveloping me. I turned around, knowing I probably needed more coffee to steady my nerves, and found I had already drained the pot.

My only recourse was to venture out into the noise of the morning commuters. I threw on some clothes, staggered out the door, stepped onto the elevator and fell 20 floors. Lying at the bottom of the elevator shaft, I had, at last, awakened.

Even with my eyes closed
The room begins to spin
In no particular direction
Yes, a silent sort of din

Kaleidoscopic swirls
Make waves across the walls
Home alone, in this nightmare
Where no one hears my calls

I try my best to stand up
But fall back onto the bed
Concentric circles swirl about
I’ll just lie down here, instead

Make it stop, I hear me say
I can’t take this any longer
A sedative can help me sleep
Or something even stronger

To silence all these demons
Playing games inside my head
I just want to go to sleep
It’s these restless nights, I dread
