“Tart of barberry, place it first
This isn’t one to quench a thirst
Careful not to catch a thorn
Lest you feel the branch’s scorn”

“All these silly spells, however did they get along this way?” Bradley pondered. He had been cleaning out his grandmother’s old trinket box when he came upon the false bottom. It’s there he found the spell.

Barberry was easy to find, and he loved a good adventure. Looking for the plumpest berry, he grabbed the branch, but alas, a thorn. The pain would not yield as Bradley sunk to the ground.

Grandmother always knows best…

She didn’t want to do it, but had no other choice

He took away her soul, he’d never claim her voice

So many wasted hours, spent in strife, discord

Too many days of bitterness, falling on her sword

Knew the time had come, to get out, make a new start

And as the final door closed, so did her broken heart

On top of the pile was the answer to everything. But what was the question? How can one find the answer without knowing what to look for? And on which pile?

Perplexed by the number of books placed haphazardly around the room, and upon shelves, Danny felt the overwhelming urge to run, in the opposite direction. There was no way for him to find the secret she claimed to have left, in the amount of time given.

Carly always had a mysterious way about her. It’s what intrigued Danny most.

It’s how she knew they would never find his body…

It was November, and the chill in the air was not from the cold…

Night fell across the snow covered mountains, but something felt strangely different, something was amiss. The orb, which had been glowing so brightly the night before, was no longer glowing at all. It was seemingly a dead rock, just floating in space. Its light had been extinguished, making the Earth much colder than ever before. Even the stars lost their twinkle. The world suddenly turned to black and white.

Not far in the distance, a diabolical laugh, sent shock waves through the mountains…

He had returned.

Cry

Sweet child

Let them see

Innocent eyes

Not understanding

Let tears flow freely down

I will shelter you from harm

And never let you fall from grace

For their light is much too dark to shine

But, your light shines much too brightly to dim

Author’s Note: Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually. An estimated 683,000 children (unique incidents) were victims of abuse and neglect in 2015, the most recent year for which there is national data. About four out of five abusers are the victims’ parents. A parent of the child victim was the perpetrator in 78.1% of substantiated cases of child maltreatment. (Info via National Children’s Alliance).  If you know of a child who is being abused, please…say something.  Calls can be anonymous!
