Porcelain, but the eyes are real
She sees what no one else can
Fiery red that frames her face
Painted lips to fool any man

Flashbacks and Yesterdays ~ #poetry #freeverse

Flashbacks, and yesterdays, things that should be

forgotten, but are not, unexplained, pushed away

from what you need, only to find another place, to hide

blanking out pictures, sepia nightmares that won’t subside.

Colorless figures you run from, don’t look behind, they’ll find

you, tucked away, in the dark, you breathe, the only sound

and as footsteps echo through the hallway, doors open.

Hold your breath! Eyes shut! Don’t let the monsters in!

Alone and lost amid verdant ground,

High upon the wood, I’m found, looking

For ones who look like me, the ones

Who form my family, for without them,

I’d just gaze about, wondering

What my life’s about, afraid to climb

To soaring heights, afraid that maybe

I just might, fail to spread my wings and fly,

Fail to find the reason why, I was left here,

By myself, a lonely bird, upon a shelf

I spent the day in quiet thought, the time passed by like lightning

How could these musings be so fraught, how could they be so frightening?

I tried to clear the darkness, yet it fought its way back in

And that was when I realized, exactly where I’d been

Lost in shadows, I crept about, noticing things encumbered

No longer freeing, always fleeing, my soul, for sure, outnumbered

She traveled quietly, about the town, no one seemed to greet her

Eerily floating above the street, I didn’t want to meet her

Soon she vanished, without a trace, and I felt myself relieved

Still I pondered why she came, and what I, did now, perceive

Mood, faded blue with endless time
Her heart ripped away, a hideous crime

Emotion, dead, from deep within
No longer feeling, the price of a sin

Gone are the days, she felt him near
Now banished is she, no longer dear

He split her apart, it took its toll
Left an empty heart, and a broken soul

He fled, into the dark of night
Leaving her shrouded, in the misty light

Shaken, she stands, feelings uncaring
Red, is the blood, so overbearing

Torn, in silence, overwrought
Her bleeding heart is life, distraught
