Eyes awaken in an ebony night
Shadowy movements dodging the light
Wondering what it is he sees here
Could it be her, the one he held near?
Darkness continues, playing its game
The silence whispering out his name
Brushing by him, in teasing allure
Wondering how much he can endure
She playfully invades his carnal dreams
Til sunlight through the window streams

Rising in the darkness
The full moon lurks
Slowly giving light
To the blackened core
Of the deepest woods
Night creatures begin to stir
Awakening, they have slept
Through the brightness
Of the summer’s day
Rustling about in the brush
With the evergreens and fronds
In watering holes and ponds
They dance with the midnight sun

I could not see your sparkle
Heard only your battle cry
Thunderous among the clouds
As your color lit the sky
Blazing in the darkness
Lighting all direction
Shining in the ebony night

The night broke
As daylight faded
Behind the shadows
Of yesterday’s warmth
Stars awakened
With a twinkle
Like eyes winking
The promise of more
Yet I wonder
As I close my eyes
Will they diminish
Fizzle away, die
Would this be the end
Of light guiding darkness
Or the beginning
Of darkness coveting day
And I open my eyes

The light stayed away
Hidden behind the grayest of gray
With darkness clouding the sky
All I can do is wonder why
This fear I cannot allay
Sleepily walking to nowhere
Wondering what I will find there
My mind in a daze
Lost in a maze
Glancing at shadows that tear
As they dance in dark, mysterious ways
Losing the hours, day after day
How do they find me
Slinking behind me
With their eerily haunting display
They gather around as they play
I’m filled with uncertain dismay
Staking their claim
They whisper my name
Dragging me back, into the gray
