Mabel made the best pies. When her sister took ill, she needed to go to her, reminding Harold he’d have to bake for the fund raiser at church. Harold, half listening, nodded, wishing her a safe trip.

It was hours later he realized, he’d have to bake on his own. Gathering ingredients, he mixed and kneaded, baked, and checked, finally taking out the pie. It looked pitiful.

Trying to put one over on the parishioners, he purchased one from the next town. His attempt at trickery failed.

Lesson learned: Never try to fool they, in whose house you also pray.

June Writing Prompt – Except without her, he couldn’t make a decent pie – Day 25/30

There must have been a thousand lights
At least that’s what it looked like to her
Mesmerized by the flames of the candles
Blending together, everything was a blur

With every flicker, she became more enrapt
Her eyes, focusing on the dancing yellow
Not hearing his footsteps come from behind
He caught her off guard, this quiet fellow

He smiled ever briefly, then tipped his hat
Explaining why he was there, that day
Lighting a candle, for his wife, who passed
He gently knelt on the altar, to pray

Feeling a strong connection to this stranger
He, a man, who surely loved his wife
She was compelled, to kneel down beside him
And contemplate her own fate, in the afterlife

December Writing Prompt – Transfixed by the lights, she never noticed he was there – Day 13/31

Torment ~ #poetry #Halloween

The steeple bells ring, this Halloween night

Blackest of ravens, begin their flight

Seeking out all, who no longer breathe

Flying about, they impatiently seethe

They must bring one back, the bell man said

Or they would, surely, be the next ones dead

Squawking to each other, they spied down below

The perfect specimen, on which they’d bestow

The terror of those which swoop down on one

Taunting and teasing, all this for fun

Until tired and spent, a human’s lament

Is carried away, in the claws of torment
