Beyond the forest glen, the realization struck her. She had been walking on the same stone path for what seemed like hours, and she was still in the place where she started. The air had changed, it was getting colder, and she had no jacket with her. Trying to decide whether she should turn around and go back or try one more time to get through the forest, she opted to go ahead.

Taking slow steps, she took note of how the path had changed. There was an iridescent glow to the stones that wasn’t there before. Even the trees looked strange, almost as if they were animated. She hesitated to go any further, but knew she couldn’t stop now. Night was falling, and soon the forest would sleep.

Several feet later, the stones, still glowing, ended. She couldn’t see around the bend, but the light was still there. Stepping as quietly as possible, she stopped where the stones ended and the densest part of the forest began. Surely she shouldn’t go into the forest. She had no flashlight, no lantern, and her phone was almost dead. She’d need that in case of an emergency. Thinking that over, she thought “This is an emergency!” Sighing loudly, then quickly covering her mouth, she saw she had no signal. The only choice she had was to keep walking in the woods, hoping she’d find the way out..

Snowcapped mountains, a place to roam

For a family of the wolves, tis their home

Frosted breath echoes, with every howl

Voices in the night, they’re on the prowl

The crisp frigid air, does charm their senses

Each one watches, with heightened defenses

Ready to strike, when the moment is right

Take heed to the call, of the wolf, in the night

A brilliant explosion, of light ‘cross the lake

Made the waters ripple, the ground, shake

Made colors shine, white, orange and green

An ethereal spark, like you never have seen

But what caused this light, to covet the land?

Surely, this wasn’t done, by one human hand

Perhaps, it is magical, a release, into stars

That cling to the night, in the sky’s reservoir

Then fall to the earth, with a dazzling flame

Such a radiance, only the heavens, could claim

Every inch of his body could sense her presence. This wasn’t something new for him. He could always feel her near him. This time, though, the feeling was different.

He sat on the beach, surfboard by his side, unable to bring himself to pick it up and head into the waves. The last time he had been here was with Margo. She had dared him into a surfing contest, to see who could ride the shortest wave for the longest amount of time. He told her she was nuts, even a seasoned surfer wouldn’t try that, but she insisted. And he’d agreed. They met at the edge of the beach, surveyed the surf, and waited for the perfect wave.

“Wave?” he joked. “More like a whitecap. You sure you can handle the heights?”

“Keep laughing, surf boy. You’re going down. I’ll show you who’s best!” And just like that she was off into the ocean. He watched her for a bit until he plunged into the water and paddled out to the next wave about to crest. He could see her at this point, and she had a strange look on her face. Getting closer to her, he called out to make sure she was okay. She looked up at him, smiled that sly smile and took off. She caught him off guard and he missed the wave. But there was a bigger one coming in. He’d ride that one and definitely beat her to shore. As soon as it crested, he was up on it, riding back to shore. When he got there, she was nowhere to be seen. He looked around, but still couldn’t find her.

Standing on the shore, he called out into the roar but she didn’t answer. He moved closer into the water, now up to his knees, still calling to her, trying to catch a glimpse of her somewhere, anywhere. If she was playing games with him, he wasn’t finding this one funny at all. Something rubbed up against his leg, and he brushed it away. It hit again. He looked down.

At his feet, bobbing in the water, was her surfboard. She wasn’t with it. In fact, she wasn’t anywhere. Panic set in as he ran into the waters, deeper and deeper, until he could no longer stand without being under. He dove under several times, hoping to find Margo, but she was gone.

Now, as he sat on the same beach, he felt her presence, again, calling to him to ride the low waves. This time, he would answer her call…

Dressed in black, like the velvet night

She walked to the edge of the boards

Reflections of stars, shined with a light

That captivated, moved her toward

The waters, mesmerized by her, were calm

She‘d lost them fast, in her dreams

For the stars were her one and only balm

Visions, she called them, her ethereal beams

She watched, as each one twinkled above

And again, as from the skies, they fell

Asteria, Goddess of the Stars, twas her love

That caught them, in the magic of her spell
