The night falls
More quickly these days
In silence,
Draped in a choking haze

Outside, an owl
Screeches my name,
What is he saying?
What does he claim?

That I took the stars
And blackened the sky,
Says the moon doesn’t shine
And he wants to know why

Hear his cry,
Ear splitting, so unnerved
Surely this raptor
Is somewhat perturbed

Still I cannot see,
What he sees, in the dark
An ebony field,
Laid barren and stark

From the one thing
That has forsaken his land
The strike of a match,
By a human hand

He has lost his home,
His place to hide
His family, no longer
By his side

Taken down in a hail
Of smoke and flame
The owl, he weeps,
And I am to blame…

Author’s Note: Seven new large fires were reported 11/5/2020, three in Idaho, two in Kansas, and one each in Minnesota and Montana. Nationally, 36 large fires have burned 2.8 million acres. (source: National Interagency Fire Center).  Before you flick that lit cigarette, or leave a campfire unattended and burning, think about how many lives you could be destroying, both wild and human.

Fight Another Day – #poetry of #life struggles

Exhausted, past the point of no return

Body aches and trembles, showing no concern

Everyday things, becoming cumbersome

By the end of the day, I’m nothing but numb

Pushing the limits, with no end in sight

Why is it, I never do, what it is that’s right?

Years of abuse, to myself, I have endured

Time and time again, my life, I have poured

Into an empty shell, trying to regain strength

Knowing in my heart, I would go to any length

To make myself better, than I was, yesterday

Trying to find the path, yet, still I go astray

Refusing to be defeated, by this human shell

Embattled, with the agony, of which, I never tell

Only I can resurrect the soul so deep inside

Else I’ll shrivel up, like a flower that has died

No, I’m not ready, not quite yet, to simply wilt away

I’ll be back tomorrow, just to fight another day!

Their Fate – #100wordstory – #JuneWriting

Soon it would be nightfall, which would surely seal their fate…

The full moon made its way from behind the dark clouds. The night was black as pitch, but she knew he was close by. The low growl he was emitting was hard to miss, against the silence of the night. A rustle of leaves meant he was on the move and would soon be joining her. She waited.

The time of the full moon, when he and she would be one. Yet, neither knew which one they’d ultimately become. Only The Fates knew what the final outcome would be.

The human factor remains a threat to them all

In the wilderness, they rely on their instinct alone

Still, animals feel pain, of this, I have no doubt

And the evil done to them, I shall never condone

She escaped the worst of it, she thought

Colored her locks, with classic brunette

Gave herself bangs, changed her attire

Still, she hadn’t gotten away, just yet

She laughed, when they all ran by her

On a bar stool she sat, happily perched

Confident now, she wouldn’t be caught

She smiled, as the whole town searched

Took on the human persona, quite pleased

With the way she had assimilated so well

Would she manage to remain one of them?

She had to be patient, only time would tell

Suddenly, something seemed different

She knew her disguise must have failed

They took her away, became belligerent

Down at the courthouse, she was jailed

Looks, can only be deceiving, for awhile

Eventually, your true colors come through

She tried to mirror humans, it’s better to not

There are some things, you can never undo
