An anniversary, another date on a calendar already filled with them. And still we celebrate, or mourn, or both at the same time, if that’s even possible.

The end of the year is a rocky one for our family. My husband’s birthday is November 4th. The same day his father passed away, at the age of 55. I try to do what I can to make the day happy for him, and at the same time, honor my father-in-law’s passing. He was very much a dad to me when my own father, aged 57, passed a mere five months after Neil and I married.

We spent a week with my dad in Florida, as part of our two week honeymoon, and for that I will be forever grateful. It’s like he knew he was leaving soon, and getting his house in order while I was there. He passed away on New Year’s Eve 1985, one day after we spoke and said we’d be calling to wish each other a great year ahead. I never had that chance. Instead, I was wakened by a phone call at 1AM telling me he was gone.

I suppose we all have memories of loved ones who have passed. Some may not impact us as much as others, while the really significant ones hit hard.

My father–in-law encouraged me to be a writer. He himself was a published author, a Faulkner Scholar and a Professor of English. I can only hope I am honoring his legacy and making him proud. My dad taught me how to live life. He had more friends than I can ever count, and everyone loved him. I hope I am, also, honoring his vision of living.

Two men

Whose time has passed

Leave behind two children

Encouragement to carry on

Honored

Whispers of wonder, beyond shadows, fall

Prismatic glow adorns the darkened trees

Lost to the wind, among mountains tall

Here is my heart, standing strong and free

Basking in the light, of the afternoon sun

I feel the warmth on my face, and it’s grand

How perfectly aligned I am, but not yet done

I still have much more I must understand

Flowers in the distance, seem to call my name

Across the lush green grasses, I wander closer

As I walk this sacred land, my soul is mine to claim

To this symphony, I am, my own composer

The forest sings to me, I’m as calm as I can be

Far beyond the realm of my command

Let us fully examine, what it is, we are seeing

Is our story a mere anecdote, unworthy of being?

Perhaps, we’re too busy, playing and tinkering

To realize we’re not living, but simply lingering

I am honored to be able to tell of my experience and be a part of “Understanding – An anthology of true and significant life events“, a book which was compiled by, and includes, author Stevie Turner, along with 19 other authors/writers.  The book is only $0.99 and all proceeds are going to cancer research.

From Amazon:

The following authors and bloggers kindly answered questions posed by Stevie Turner regarding significant life experiences they had undergone. These events include sexual abuse, a near death experience, alcoholism, being diagnosed with cancer, depression, losing weight, getting married, being a mother to many children, being the daughter of a narcissistic mother, and many more!

All proceeds will go to Cancer Research.

Thanks to:
Alienora Browning, Sally Cronin, Dorinda Duclos, Scarlett Flame, Bernard Foong, Darlene Foster, Janet Gogerty,  Debbie Harris, Lucy V. Hay, Miriam Hurdle, Phil Huston, Pamela Jessen, Joe, D.G Kaye, Lynda McKinney Lambert, Jaye Marie, Clive Pilcher, Abbie Johnson Taylor and Beem Weeks.

An Excerpt from my part:

A Near-Death Experience

Did you grow up believing that near death experiences occurred?
I grew up in a Catholic household. We were taught to believe in God and that Heaven was waiting for us when we died. My parents never spoke of anything beyond that but it was always in the back of my mind. What would happen if I almost died? Would I see God, heaven, would angels be singing? I’m still seeking some of those answers.

Are you psychic? Have you ever seen ghosts?
I am told I am Clairescencient. I often have spirits wandering my home. As long as they are not evil, I welcome them here. Otherwise, they get the boot. I can feel their pain, their desire to leave this dimension, unsure why they are still here. I have written about them many times in my poetry.

Are any other family members psychic?
Not to my knowledge. I have never heard any of them speak of it. My son does have the same sense I do, as far as feeling another presence, but does not communicate with them.

***********

To find out more about my experience, please consider purchasing the book.  There are so many amazing stories contained within! Thank you!!   ❤

In
Green fields
Of petals
Bathed in sunlight
I wandered along
Haphazardly looking
For that one lucky clover
When a glimpse of white caught my eye
And in between a perfect feather
Tis a symbol of good luck, not for I
Twas the bird long ago, dropped his treasure
And with it the memories fell too
Floating gently down to the ground
Irretrievable stories
Seemingly forgotten
Caught upon the winds
Taken in the breeze
Where life flies
Swiftly
