I tried to hide behind this tree
And hoped that he would not see me

A hyena is no one’s friend out here
Especially for a meaty hippo, I fear

He’ll make me his dinner, I can’t have that
Maybe I should be trying to chat

With him, before he gets too close
Though he may find me quite morose

Instead, perhaps, I could explain
That I’m no feast, he should abstain

He needs more meat, for his thin frame
Go on, go find some other game!

But silly me, he couldn’t care less
And so to him, I will acquiesce

But wait! He’s leaving, yes! I’m saved
It wasn’t hippo he really craved!

On opposite sides of the fence

Two people, strangers no more

But the wire that stood between them

Was locked, like a rusted old door

Love etched upon the metal bolt

And a date they both knew by heart

One they would never get to

The fence kept them too far apart

Defiant, they pulled on the gate

Hoping, the lock, they could sever

For love can never be kept at bay

When you’re fighting for a forever

So many people would visit
Men, dressed in suits and ties
Daddy would always be there
I learned later, they were alibis

Plenty of money to go around
We had everything under the sun
A beautiful home, cars to match
Daddy would never be outdone

Mama never questioned why
His meetings, were behind a closed door
I’m not really sure she understood
What it meant, to be in a mob war

Both of us were oblivious to it
Daddy never let on, not at all
But eventually, we found out the secret
It was the beginning of our downfall

Mama wound up in the psych ward
She remained there until she died
I wound up in psychotherapy
It seemed like a good place to hide

They found my body, on Christmas Eve
I no longer needed to be discreet
Still, no one knows who murdered me
So much for a life, lived on easy street

Author’s Note:  This poem is loosely based on a memoir written by Susan Berman, about her father, titled “Easy Street: The True Story of a Mob Family”.  In what remains an unsolved crime, Berman was murdered in her home and her body discovered on Christmas Eve day 2000.

Why bother to swim, when I can hitch a ride

Hope onto the lily pads, scattered, by the side

Bask in the warming sunlight, dry off, and relax

Then jump onto another one, and let it take me back

Float among the flora, munch on all the weeds

Happy just to be a frog, living among the reeds

Beyond the archway, across the rocks

Where mist does linger and flowers flock

A climb, thousands of miles to the top

The mountains create a beautiful backdrop

Snow covered, white, against the bluest sky

I journey to my cathedral, in the heavens, high

My worldly place, an earthen sanctuary

Where I can go to, beyond the contrary

Of inhumane faces, and misguided beings

A place I know my God, is ever so freeing
