Perched up high, upon a branch

In the forest, dark and scary

The owl waits for his next prey

Though his mistress, quite contrary

She sits inside, in black of night

By the window, where she eyes

Creatures scurrying about the grass

And much to her surprise

One comes closer, just enough

So the door, she opens wide

Watches as it makes its way

Unsuspecting, now inside

The cauldron boils and bubbles

As the witch begins to chortle

“Trick or treat, my tasty one

It’s time for my nightly mortal”

The children journeyed near the forest house
She stood there, watching and waiting
Not making a sound, as quiet as a mouse
The witch thought this ever frustrating

All she wanted was to make a stew
The ingredients, of course, did matter
Children, she thought, ah! Something new
She would whip up a nice tasty batter

Douse them with flour, throw in some eggs
Mix it all up with her broomstick
Heads and arms, tangled feet and legs
Straight into the oven, she was quick

Closed the door tightly, then shouted with glee
“Yes! Yes!! Such a fanciful notion!”
“I once heard that children are very tasty,”
Then came a sound, quite the commotion!

Looking about, she spied her creations
Escaping, they ran, hurried, for the door
Sighing, the witch, now lacking elation
“Oh well, I’ll just wait for two more.”

My Familiar sits, so patiently
Atop the balcony, she waits
For she is a wise companion
Yes, her senses are innate

Black and white, against the night
Eyes glowing, emerald green
She knows my every secret
Her intelligence, quite keen

I don’t have to tell her my story
There’s no need, she is my friend
And already knows the outcome
Just as I do, in the end

Trustworthy, faithful, together
We grow old, in the same skin
Nine lives are not just for kitty
When a witch’s tale, we spin

With the light of the moon above us
Illuminating the purple sky
My Familiar and I, in harmony
As we watch the stars go by

And wait for the morning sun to shine
Then, she knows, this is the time
When she’ll disappear, once again
Becoming one with me, sublime

Trick or Treat Tree – #poetry – #witch – #Halloween

The crows were squawking, as loud as could be
My sister and I, were hiding, by the old tree
The witch, with her lantern, looking all around
I whispered to sister, “Now don’t make a sound!”

“I know you’re here” said the witch to the air
“I sense your presence, I feel your despair!”
Silly old hag, surely you couldn’t know why
Two little girls would want, on you, to spy

But the witch did know, and it was plain to see
Sister and I were trapped, no way to get free!
The vines from the tree, slithering like a snake
Wrapping themselves around us, no way we could break

It seems we were tricked, by our own curiosity
Caught in the woods, no treat, this monstrosity
We knew we overstepped, but what could we do?
So we jumped out from behind, and simply yelled, BOO!

“What a treat!” said the witch, who couldn’t help but smile
“Do come in, sit, and chat with me, for a while.”
But we knew better, pleading, “please let us leave here”
“Ha! It’s too late for that!” she said with a sneer

With a hiss from her lips, she warned, once again
“For now, you’re alive, but you will feel my bane
When ghosts come a calling, and crows circle high
It’s your time to leave, without saying goodbye…”

The kettle boils, the crystal sparks
A potion, brewing, in the dark

Jack-O-Lantern, with its batty grin
Sends a chill, up the spine, within

A witch’s hat, but where is she?

Steam rising, the cauldron spits
Candles flicker, yet, there it sits

Black as night, and pointed high
Seems this spell has gone awry

Perhaps, it wasn’t meant to be!

Candles burn, as wax pours down
Still on the chair, a witch’s crown

Dare not touch it, else you’ll find
Two of us, neither of which is kind

Together, we’re one, this witch, and me
In the darkness, I’ve set my spirit free!
