Shout out to Annette Rochelle Aben for planting the seed. Here is the sequel to An Old Bridge.

Darkness now surrounds you
You can feel your body falling

There’s nothing to hang on to
Arms and legs, about, are sprawling

Your eyes cannot adjust, no light
You’re blinded, tumbling fast

Praying this is just a dream
And you’ll wake up, at last

You yell for help, hoping
Someone can hear your call

But all you hear are echoes
Of your voice, against the wall

It seems your fear was justified
Never should have taken the leap

The weight of all your troubles
Sent you to your eternal sleep

For when you fall into the abyss
You’ll, forever, slumber deep…

A ramshackle old bridge
Stands here, in disrepair
Do you dare to cross it?
Will you make it over there?

To the other side
That you can barely see
Into the forest clearing, where
Sunbeams kiss the trees

To your soul it’s calling
Do you take the first step?
Fear builds deep inside you
Trepidation intercepts

You move in closer, slowly
Then back away, afraid to cross
Pick up a nearby stone
Into the river, you do toss

But no sound comes from it
Just a thud, onto dry land
Tis then you suddenly realize
You’ve had the upper hand

Stepping upon the boards, you sigh
“How could I be frightened of THIS?”
Then one breaks beneath you
And you fall… into the abyss…
