Memorial Day, Night Owl Poetry, poems, poetry, soldiers

A flag draped coffin
carries the soul of a
warrior, who laid
down his life for
his country

The ultimate sacrifice
of body and mind
he served his nation
with pride and honor
defending her to the end

There are no words
that can be spoken,
as a mother weeps
and a child cries…
those he leaves behind with memories of

A man who loved his country
A husband who loved his wife
A father who loved his children
A son & brother who loved his family
A being who loved us all

This weekend, we honor the men and women of the Armed Forces, who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we can continue our lives knowing the freedoms we are truly blessed with.  To them I say Thank You….

Cloudburst

lightning, Night Owl Poetry, poems, poetry, rain, storms, thunder

Blue skies overshadowed
with grey puffs, a warning
as the sunlight fades

Clouds burst and thunder claps, as
lightning brightens the darkness
and disappears again

Streets become pools
of unswimmable water,
the current carrying the days travels
down a hollow, rushing endlessly
toward the abyss

Water assaults your face
as you fight your umbrella
and the winds that threaten to take you
in a Mary Poppins kind of way

And then it’s gone, leaving
the air heavy with the scent
of rain….

Insomnia

insomnia, Night Owl Poetry, no sleep, poems, poetry, sleep

Nights lost to a struggle
unable to shut down
a mind that is filled with
wandering dreams
and obsessive thoughts
constantly invading, reminding
of things to be done
in the waking dawn
that comes too quickly

Planet Earth

Big silver bird up in the sky
Fly me to the moon
We must hurry, no time to waste
I have to be there soon

I want to sit above the world
And watch its changing wonder
Before mankind destroys it all
And puts us all asunder

The life we lead will surely be
Our imminent demise
We cannot brush this all away
Our planet slowly dies

We need to stop the chemicals
We spread across the land
And go back to the simple ways
It all goes hand in hand

As I look down upon the blue
As beautiful as can be, please
Care for her as you would yourself
She belongs to you and me

Cold, creamy frozen confection
swirled in a glass chamber
drenched in warm fudge
oozing down the sides
sprinkled with pieces
of colorful confetti, covered
in billowing clouds
of luscious cream
topped with crimson
