Ivy covers your window sill
Reflections linger, ever still
Eyes that shield the sunlit day
Memories that come and stay
Are shadows cast, an eerie face
Reflections linger, in this place
As I look up, no longer smile
Knowing you’ve been gone awhile
You never thought that you belonged
I never tried to prove you wrong
I watched as you let life slip by
I always thought you’d never die
How could I abandon you?
Reflections linger, filled with rue
Now this window, draws me here
Memories, becoming clear
My world will never be the same
Reflections linger, along with blame

“I always thought you’d never die” reminds me of both my grandfather and my father. Both died so surprisingly and suddenly. And both were not old.

I’m fascinated by all the comments from this poem. I wrote it about heroine addiction, and how many young lives are taken, yet it could apply to so many

Thank you, Diana. A reflection of the heroine epidemic that has taken front and center in and around our towns…

I read it more broadly than that, but it certainly applies to the human tragedy of addiction. 😦 A sad poem.
