A door unopened, here remains
Through sharpest winds and icy rains

Where it leads, I do not know
Perhaps it’s only here for show

But what is that, a creature there?
Who looks completely unaware

Nary a movement does he make
I don’t think that he’s awake!!

I’ll walk ever quietly, to the door
This one I’ve never been before

Slowly, so he does not rouse
Toward the door, just let him drowse

Pray, the hinges will not creak
When I open the portal to take a peek

This gate was in the middle of nowhere on a nature trail. The little creature is actually the root system from a fallen tree!!

The pathway is lighted to welcome you in

The holidays are here, let the party begin

Family all gathered around the Christmas tree

Mom and Dad caroling, with Ole Auntie Dee

Spirits are flowing, with happiness and cheer

As we celebrate love, with the ones we hold dear

Blocked with stones, and locked forever

A place where once, the plentiful, stored

Fed the hungry, through cold winter days

Now left alone, empty, and ignored

The door that held the bounty

Of this land, so lovingly tilled

No longer can be opened

No longer can be filled

For it only stands in memory

Of one who can never be replaced

A root cellar door, forever closed

Yet, still fertile, in this hallowed place

Who could live inside this house?

Perhaps it’s meant, for a wee mouse

No, even he would be too big

To sit upon the tiny twig

That leads up to the open door

My finger fits, but nothing more

I can’t imagine what could be

Inside this house, upon this tree

I could knock, then wait a few

I guess it’s something I could do

Knock, knock, knock, there’s no reply

Giving up, I heave a sigh

Maybe it’s just here for show

And there really is no one to know

Author’s note:  My husband found this little ornament hanging on a tree in one of my favorite places, Laurelwood Arboretum.  Someone had a sense of humor!

All Hallows Soon – #ThursdayDoors #poetry #Halloween

door
Blood stained hands, behind the door

Tell a tale, of life, no more

Never shall they see the light

Scared to death, they screamed, affright

Tried to free themselves, in vain

Never to be free again

Guarded by unearthly ghouls

Maybe this is April Fool’s

No, it’s October, all Hallows soon

When the spirits are again attune

To capture next, their earthly prey

Steal the human souls, away

But humans push back, try to run

They don’t consider this much fun

Against the door, their bodies heave

Try as they may, they still can’t leave

Locked inside this hellish glass

Together, remaining, forever, en masse
