I always look this way
Nothing’s the matter
Honestly, no really, I’m okay
I wouldn’t lie to you
What’s the point of that?
I haven’t smiled, because
It’s nothing I’m good at
Doesn’t matter anymore
I prefer to be alone
No need to ask again and again
You’ll only produce a groan
I said I was fine, no really
I mean it, please take me at my word
Read between the lines, you’ll see
Your questions are a bit absurd

Reading between the lines or asking the right questions give more information than what someone may say…

I know. That was the point. We need to pick up on people’s avoidance of what is actually going on inside. But the question “Are you okay?” is trite.

That question can be the introduction but must never be the end of the conversation. If we don’t want to know we should not ask…

I go in the opposite direction. I watch, look for odd signs. I suppose I do this because I had to deal with my daughter being bullied when younger. It was a horrible time, and I missed the first signals. I’m more likely to observe before asking if all is ok. I get a better sense of the situation.

You have fine sensors, Dorinda. I know what you mean with observing and getting a sense in order to ask the right questions. And yes “are you ok” can be the completely wrong question!

How many times we force a smile when that is the last thing we feel.

As I read between the lines, I suspect that she is actually not fine at all. Too often, we push away the ones we love when we’re suffering, instead of letting them help us.

Too often the ones we love are the one’s creating the turmoil. Is there ever an equal balance?

The million dollar question, Dorinda. I’m always in search of the proper balance. The more emotion we invest, the more we have to lose.

True, Brenda. I guess there really is no happy median.

Boy does that sound like something I would say way back when. Especially, when my depression was so far gone.
Great piece!
