I’m wondering if all of you are experiencing the same thing I am. There were an abundance of new followers, each with an Outlook email address (red flag). Well, don’t get your hopes up. they’re mostly spammers.
I have been in touch with WordPress, who assures me their engineers are working on the problem. Uh huh…meantime, I have already sent 6-7 comments to spam, and this is just today. It’s been going on for 3 days.
Should you experience this yourself, might do some good to email WP with the info (email & IP show in your comment section). Perhaps it might speed things up a bit. All I know is I do not have the time to keep deleting or marking them as spam.

yeah seems fine. I got a bit paranoid and deleted a bunch of followers too that had no WP sites or looked dodgy. 🙂

Not everyone who visits has a WP site. Many of my friends come in with just their avatars. So be careful who you kick to the curb lol

Delete doesn’t do anything to alert WordPress. You need to send them to spam.

I always get a lot of spam (and I end up in spam too). For a while, a couple posts were getting about 1000 a day! I had to close comments on the posts to stop it. I’m glad that WP catches it, but it is time-consuming.

The problem was, they weren’t catching it! But seems to be better now. OMG, D! 1000 a day!! That’s nuts!

It was just one post that seemed to be spam magnet, Dorinda, so it was easy to deal with. And yes, I’ve had a few get through, but it does seem to be better these last few days :-).

Just a time waster, Penny. I moderate my comments, so I’m able to catch them. I feel sorry for those who do not. What a pain!

I’m guessing it’s coming in too quickly, and too often for akismet to catch it all. They need to block the IPs

I’ve been marking them as spam, but they often return after ten or fifteen minutes and I have to do it again.

If you notice, the email address is different most of the time, even though the name is usually Alex or Avery

I have noticed that, but the spam doesn’t appear as a new notification. It’s a mess. I hope they resolve it quickly.

Outlook is the worst e-mail program you can use, BUTT spam e-mail followers can do you no harm. They do you no good either but the harm they can inflict is zero. I hear outlook is working to resolve this issue.
